I Was Hungry and You Gave Me Food... by Concon Sardovia

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:40.

As part of the Couples for Christ and Family Ministries (“CFC”) Social Ministry commitment to help the least of their brothers, CFC members participated in the Soup Run (“Run”) of the Salvation Army. They volunteered in the Run for 5 days from February 23 to 27, 2010. Each day, four CFC members went to the Salvation Army Harbour Light Centre to assist in the preparation of sandwiches and soup for the Run. After the food were prepared, Mr. Lionel Cann, a dedicated staff of the Salvation Army, four members of CFC, and an experienced volunteer rode the van to start roaming the streets of Hamilton City to look for homeless and hungry people who were in need of food.

There were designated places where Mr. Cann parked the van, and depending on the number of people asking for food, there were about 7 - 8 stops. On every stop, volunteers asked anyone who approached the van how many soup and sandwiches they wanted to have. While the volunteers were handing out the food, Mr. Cann chatted with the homeless people. If there were any food left, these were handed to the Salvation Army Shelter at Parsons Road.

Volunteers were blessed to see how a simple sandwich and a cup of soup can bring smiles to the face of the homeless. It was truly a work of the Lord!

The Salvation Army carries out the Run six days a week from Mondays to Saturdays. Volunteers come from different social, civic and church organizations across the Island. If you would like to volunteer, you can contact Christine Marquez, CFC Bermuda Social Ministry Head or Lyco Cacaldo, Singles For Christ Household Leader and an active volunteer at the Salvation Army. Alternatively, you can leave a note in this website.
